Healthy Habit Stacking

Healthy habit stacking is a technique that involves using an existing healthy habit as an anchor to build new healthy habits. Let's say you have a twice-daily skincare ritual. You can use this ritual as an anchor to add a new healthy habit to your routine like taking supplements, breath-work, exercise, journaling, incorporating a new skincare product or ritual like dry-brushing, etc.

Let's lean into journaling for example. Before or after your skincare ritual, set aside ten minutes to write in your journal. Over time, this habit will become second nature and you'll be more likely to stick with it.

The key to successful habit stacking is to choose an anchor habit that you already enjoy and do consistently. This makes it easier to add a new habit rather than starting from scratch. Additionally, it's important to start small and gradually build up the habit. Starting with just a few minutes a day is more sustainable than trying to do an hour of journaling (or whatever the new habit is) right away.

Another benefit of habit stacking is that it saves time and energy. Instead of trying to fit in new habits into your already packed schedule, you can use existing habits as a starting point. The goal is to create a routine that feels effortless and enjoyable.

Starting with small, manageable goals is key to habit stacking success. Don’t overwhelm yourself by trying to take on too much at once. Start with a small amount of time for your journaling practice, and gradually increase the time as you become more comfortable with the habit. Remember to be gentle with yourself, and understand that change takes time.

Remember to celebrate your progress and give yourself credit for your success. Celebrating serves as a positive reinforcement and motivates you to keep going.

Incorporating healthy habit stacking into your life can have a profound impact on your overall well-being. By prioritizing self-care and consistency, you can improve your mental clarity, reduce stress, and boost your overall mood. Additionally, developing new habits improves your self-discipline, which can translate into other areas of your life.
